3 To 5 Cups Of Coffee A Day May Lower Heart Attack Risk

By: Tanya Lewis  Published: 03/02/2015 07:09 PM EST on LiveScience Good news for people who drink coffee every day: Consuming a moderate amount of coffee could lower the risk of clogged arteries that can lead to a heart attack, a new study finds. The study of healthy young adults in Korea found that, compared with people who didn't  drink coffee , those who drank three to five cups of java per day had a lower risk of having calcium deposits in their coronary arteries, which is an indicator of  heart disease . (The coronary arteries are the vessels that bring oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself.) The study participants who drank three to four cups had the lowest risk of developing clogged arteries seen in the study, said Dr. Eliseo Guallar, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, and co-author of the study published today (March 2) in the journal Heart. "But the risk went down with jus...

Average Penis Size Study Shows 'Normal' Isn't Necessarily What You Thought

What's the  average penis size ? The results are in, and they show it takes less to be well-endowed than you might think. The  average length of an erect penis  is 5.16 inches (13.12 centimeters) and the average circumference is 4.59 inches (11.66 centimeters), according to a new analysis of penis length studies involving more than 15,000 men around the world. As for a flaccid penis, the average length is 3.61 inches (9.16 centimeters) and the average circumference is 3.66 inches (9.31 centimeters). It looks like  Jonah Falcon  is an even bigger outlier than we realized... The British researchers behind the analysis say theirs is the  first systematic review of penis size measurements . "We wanted to be able to help men and their doctors with a definitive paper since there are many contradictory reports from small or poor quality studies," study co-author Dr. Gordon Muir, a urological surgeon at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Lon...

Rosetta snaps a picture of its own shadow on the comet below

If the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was a groundhog, we would all be worrying about six more weeks of winter right now. As it is, it's always winter on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The comet is frigid, coming in at -94 degrees Fahrenheit. The ESA released an image Tuesday of the comet-orbiting Rosetta leaving a fleeting mark on the comet: its shadow. The space agency describes it as being "encircled in a wreath of light." It was a rare confluence of circumstances that enabled the image to exist as the sun, spacecraft and comet all came into alignment. RELATED STORIES Rosetta buzzes comet for close-up of craggy surface Official Rosetta image reveals comet's true colors Rosetta's comet is singing, and it sounds like Predator The shadow is diffuse, rather than sharp. The  ESA explains this by noting , "If you were standing on the surface with Rosetta high above you, there would be no place in the shadow where the entire Sun wo...

Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Tom Hanks Have Serious Fun for Paul Newman

It was a night of serious fun filled with singing, dancing, laughter and also tears as some influential Hollywood stars gathered in New York on Monday night to celebrate the legacy of screen legend  Paul Newman  and his  SeriousFun  Children’s Network, a growing community of summer camps he created in 1988 to serve children with serious illnesses. “This is the best show of New York City tonight,”  David Letterman , who made a rare public appearance to honor his old pal, told the packed crowd at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. The late-night host went on to rave about Newman’s charismatic personality. “I’m lucky enough to have known Paul Newman for quite a few years,” Letterman said before showing a montage of Newman’s frequent visits to his CBS show. “He was so generous, and he would visit us on the show and never turned us down, regardless of his schedule. His presence made everybody feel better. He w...

The Bachelor Women Tell All Special

I've been waiting on the Women Tell All Special since episode two. The personalities this season have been phenomenal. Obviously, I was most excited to watch Kelsey use big words to back track on her assertion that her husband's death was an amazing story, and for Carly and Britt to get awkward. It all happened, and it was great. I think the best thing about this episode was the screen shots, so I'll include those. 1. Chris starts asking the girls questions, and Jillian jumps in to scream at Carly that Britt is the most genuine person she knows. Why can't we get a black box over Jillian's mouth? Samantha and Trina decide to speak finally, better late than never, and both are actually quite sassy. 2. I'll say something nice first, it looks like Britt showered for this. Britt has mastered the art of a crying face, without water actually coming out of her eyes. Crying makes me uncomfortable, ergo Britt makes me uncomfortable. She's mostly concerned about...

Country superstar Carrie Underwood sent her Instagram followers into a frenzy Tuesday morning with the first published photo of her newborn baby boy. She also revealed the name of the child, who is the first for the singer and her husband, professional hockey player Mike Fisher. SIDEBAR Carrie Underwood's 'Guns' Are Blazing on Parental Behavior » A close-up image of the baby's fingers was accompanied on the social media posting by the caption that revealed the news of the birth: "Tiny hands and tiny feet...God has blessed us with an amazing gift!" Underwood writes. "Isaiah Michael Fisher — born on February 27. Welcome to the world, sweet angel!" Although the name was kept under wraps until the Instagram post, Underwood had already  revealed the baby's gender  on live TV, during the 2014 CMA Awards in November. Well, actually, her co-host Brad Paisley is the one who spilled the baby beans, in a comical moment that proved to be one of th...

Gartner: Apple beats Samsung in Q4 smartphone sales

There's a new smartphone king. Apple snatched the top spot during the fourth quarter, displacing rival Samsung Electronics, which held the crown since 2011, according to market researcher Gartner. The launch of the ultra-popular iPhone 6 and 6 Plus propelled Apple to the No. 1 position for worldwide smartphone sales, commanding a 20.4% share of the market. Samsung finished second, with 19.9%, down nearly 10% from a year ago. Samsung is being squeezed in the middle between Apple and Chinese vendors offering phones at lower prices. "With Apple dominating the premium phone market and the Chinese vendors increasingly offering quality hardware at lower prices, it is through a solid ecosystem of apps, content and services unique to Samsung devices that Samsung can secure more loyalty and longer-term differentiation at the high end of the market," Gartner research director Roberta Cozza said in a statement Tuesday. Samsung hopes to reignite interest in its smartphon...

BlackBerry CEO: I'm open to creating a tablet again

That's if CEO John Chen thinks the opportunity is right. "It's not in the works, but it's on my mind," Chen said in an interview at the  Mobile World Congress  conference here. A BlackBerry  tablet  could satisfy the needs of a small but fiercely loyal group of productivity-focused customers who have stuck with the struggling smartphone maker and its operating system, potentially giving it a new revenue stream. But there aren't enough BlackBerry faithful to sustain such a business, especially given the tablet category saw  its first year-over-year decline  in shipments in the fourth quarter.

GOOGLE IS PLANNING TO OFFER ITS OWN CELLULAR DATA NETWORK

BY  DANIELLE HOWE Move on over, traditional phone plans. Following weeks of rumors that it would introduce its own cell-data network,  Google  confirmed reports that it will be indeed taking on the endeavor.  The search-engine giant made the announcement at the wireless show in Barcelona, Spain, on Monday that it will sell data plans for smartphones and tablets in the next coming months. It hasn’t been revealed which wireless carrier would be hosting the Google service, but various reports suggest that Sprint and T-Mobile are the frontrunners. The move comes as a game changer for the wireless network market, though Google insists that its plan is not to become a huge competitor in that field. “We don’t intend to be a network operator at scale,” said Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior vice president of products. “Our goal here is to drive a set of innovations which we think the ecosystem should evolve and hopefully will get traction.” The decision co...

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere to miss FA Cup quarter-final

Arsenal  manager  Arsene Wenger  has confirmed that  Jack Wilshere  will not be fit for next Monday's  FA Cup  quarter-final away at  Manchester United . The midfielder recently  underwent a minor procedure  on his ankle that is not expected to keep him sidelined for too long. However, Wenger has revealed that the tie at Old Trafford will come too soon for the 23-year-old. "It takes some time to heal the wound after the surgery. It will take his a few days," the French boss told reporters. "I don't set any dates, but what is for sure is that for Man United he will not be available." Wilshere has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season.

Boston bombing jury chosen; trial to start Wednesday

Almost two years after the Boston Marathon bombing, the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is set to begin with opening statements Wednesday. After two months of jury selection, a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates was seated Tuesday. Tsarnaev, 21, faces 30 charges in connection with twin bombings at the finish line of the marathon April 15, 2013. Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured. He is also charged in the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer days after the bombings. If the jury convicts Tsarnaev, the trial will move on to a second phase to determine his punishment. The only two options available for the jury are life in prison or the death penalty. Tsarnaev's defense lawyers tried four times to have the trial moved out of Boston, arguing that the scale of the attack was so vast that every potential juror could already know the case on a personal level. It was the largest act of terrorism in Boston's history, and its eff...

U.S. House to vote on security bill without immigration provisions

(Reuters) - House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner cleared the way for a vote as soon as Tuesday on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security for the rest of the fiscal year, dealing a blow to conservative Republicans who wanted to include language blocking President  Barack  Obama ' s  immigration actions. If successful, the vote would end a legislative standoff that began late last year over security funding and Obama's immigration actions, which have been put on hold by the courts. Spending authority for the department that spearheads domestic counter terrorism operations ends at midnight on Friday. Boehner was left with few if any viable procedural options to continue the fight over Obama's executive actions that last year bypassed Congress to lift the threat of deportation for millions of undocumented residents. Obama and Democrats have backed a so-called clean funding bill passed by the Senate, and Senate Democrats have repeatedly blocked ...

This Majestic Photo of a Weasel Riding a Woodpecker Has Taken Over the Internet

Isn't nature glorious?! East London hobby photographer  Martin Le-May  captured an incredible image of a weasel riding a woodpecker into battle during the great Weasel-Squirrel-Chipmunk War of 2015. You can almost hear the furry creature shouting, "Onward, noble steed! To glory!" Fine, we made up most of that scenario, but that is a real photo (minus  John Travolta , of course) of a weasel riding on the back of a woodpecker and it's making the rounds on the Internet. But unfortunately, the situation that created the image is much less magical. The weasel was trying to kill the woodpecker.   Le-May described the encounter to  Buzzfeed , calling it "the struggle for life" as the woodpecker eventually escaped with its life and the weasel "disappeared into the long grass, hungry." RELATED: The dress that tore the Internet apart also brought it together The photo soon went viral, so you can all guess what happened next, right? Memes, y'...
